ENERGYUNITED ANNOUNCES SPORTS CAMP SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
STATESVILLE, N.C. – Two local students have earned Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships from EnergyUnited to attend summer basketball camps at two of the state’s largest universities.
Nyaria Day of Aggie Academy in Guilford County will attend the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at N.C. State University this summer. Additionally, Nixon Montgomery of North Academy of World Languages in Mecklenburg County will attend the Carolina Basketball School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
“I am really excited to go to the Sports Camp at N.C. State this summer,” Nyaria said. “It’s really cool that I got picked. I am ready to learn new things and meet other kids that love basketball just as much as I do.” Nixon also expressed his excitement and appreciation, saying “I am thankful for being selected for this basketball camp at UNC, and I’m excited to practice this much basketball in four days.”
Nixon and Nyaria were selected by a panel of judges based on an application that included academic achievements, extracurricular activities, an essay and a short-answer question.
“As a local, not-for-profit electric cooperative, EnergyUnited is committed to delivering a brighter energy future by empowering communities,” said Cheryl Wright, vice president of the EnergyUnited Board of Directors. “These scholarships represent more than just an opportunity to excel in a single sport – they are an investment in the leadership and confidence of each student. We are proud to support these young athletes as they grow into future champions and community leaders.”
During the overnight camps, students will stay in dorms on campus and soak up lessons on the hardwood from collegiate coaches and current and former student-athletes. Coaches and players at both overnight camps will work closely with each camper to develop fundamental skills that will help them excel on and off the court.
Leading the N.C. State women’s camp is head coach Wes Moore, his coaching staff, and current and former N.C. State women’s basketball players. The UNC camp is led by head coach and former Tar Heel player, Hubert Davis, his staff, and current and past Tar Heel men’s basketball players.
More than 50 students from across the state will attend basketball camp on a Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship from electric cooperatives in North Carolina this year. Now in its 22nd year, the scholarship program demonstrates the electric cooperatives’ commitment to building a brighter future through continued support for education and youth initiatives.
