Happy Holidays!
From all of us at EnergyUnited, we wish you and yours a very happy and safe holiday season. Our offices will be closed December 25-26.

The holiday season offers a special opportunity to pause, reflect and appreciate the people and moments that bring light and warmth into our lives. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to each of you, our valued members, for being part of the EnergyUnited community. Simply put, we wouldn’t be the cooperative we are today without your support, feedback and commitment. When we think of the gifts of the season, our members are at the top of the list. Thank you all for being valued members of our thriving community.

At EnergyUnited, we’re reminded daily that true energy doesn’t just flow through power lines, it flows through the connections we share with one another. Whether it’s volunteering in our communities, supporting local initiatives or ensuring reliable service through every season, our mission remains rooted in care, connection and community. In fact, the EnergyUnited Foundation is on track for another record year of giving back to members and organizations in need of assistance. Funded entirely by Operation Round-Up, we are constantly amazed at the generosity of our membership. Thank you to all who are enrolled in Operation Round-Up in this oftentimes life-changing program.

As you gather with loved ones to celebrate this holiday season, we encourage you to take a few extra moments to ensure your home and family stay safe. In this issue, you’ll find practical tips to keep in mind while decorating, simple precautions that can make all the difference in protecting what matters most. And if you haven’t checked it out already, our online recipe collection, compiled from member submissions, is filled with delicious dishes to try out this holiday season. I hope you get a chance to gather around the table for something special with your family and friends this month.

From all of us at EnergyUnited, thank you for letting us be part of your lives this year. We wish you a joyful, peaceful holiday season and a bright start to the new year ahead.

Warm regards,
Thomas Golden, CEO

Brian, IT

This year, EnergyUnited helped members stay one step ahead with practical online safety tips and tools designed to keep you secure. Here’s a look at the advice we shared, and improvements we made, with your security in mind:

TOP ONLINE SAFETY TIPS FROM 2025

  • Think before you click: Skip unknown links and go directly to trusted sites.
  • Shop smart: Use secure sites (“https”) and pay with credit cards or digital wallets.
  • Stay updated: Stay protected by keeping all your devices and apps up to date.
  • Use strong passwords: Use long and unique passwords or a password generator. Consider a password manager to keep your info safe.
  • Back up your data: Save copies of key files in a secure location.
  • Teach digital habits: Help kids protect privacy and take screen breaks.

MEMBER-FOCUSED SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS

  • We added extra login security to MyEnergyHub with two-factor authentication.
  • We made paperless billing easier to use with a cleaner look and quicker access to support.
  • We ran a full emergency test to make sure your online tools stay up and running — even during disasters.

EMBRACE THE SEASON of giving With Operation Round-Up

We’re proud to empower our members’ lives in more ways than one. All donations from the EnergyUnited Foundation come from members rounding up their monthly bill through our Operation Round-Up program. These pennies, dimes and quarters add up to make for big, meaningful changes across our communities. We invite you to enroll in Operation Round-Up to support these causes. Call 1-800-522-3793 or sign up on My EnergyHub.

Investing in future RELIABILITY & GROWTH

EnergyUnited’s Mooresville Substation is currently under construction. The cooperative expects the substation to be energized in May 2026 to deliver power to approximately 2,000 members in the area.

EnergyUnited is making progress on a major project to deliver a reliability boost for members in the Mooresville area. Construction on our new Mooresville Substation is underway and will continue to move forward this fall.

Once complete, the Mooresville Substation will serve approximately 2,000 EnergyUnited members. One benefit will be a new circuit to deliver reliable power to the industrial park along Cornelius Road. The upgrades will also help relieve pressure on the Wesley Chapel Substation and support the growing energy needs of the region.

The main structures in the substation have been installed, and our Technical Services team is busy adding important equipment like reclosers and voltage regulators. Work on the project is expected to be completed — and the substation energized — in May 2026.

“This project reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, reliable service and preparing for future growth,” said Steve Estes, Manager of Engineering for EnergyUnited. “We’re excited about the benefits the new substation will bring to our members in the Mooresville area.”

We’re proud to continue investing in our system as part of our efforts to deliver safe, affordable, reliable and sustainable power to our members.

ENERGYUNITED’S DEMAND RESPONSE PROGRAM UPDATE

EnergyUnited’s demand response programs — Beat the Peak and Peak Time Perks — have officially been retired. If you were previously enrolled in either program, you will no longer receive event notifications or program incentives.Thank you for your support of these programs. We’re continuing to explore new ways to deliver value to our members.

Holiday SafetySTARTS HERE

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Let’s make sure it stays that way with these holiday safety tips:

Deck the Halls Safely

  • Use only lights, cords, animated displays and decorations rated for outdoor use.
  • When decorating outside, look up and around for power lines. Never throw lights or other decorations into trees near power lines.
  • Keep ladders, equipment and yourself at least ten feet away from power lines.
  • Cords should be plugged into outlets equipped with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs).

RETIRINGCAPITAL CREDITS

IMG_3638-1.png
Scott, Member Accounting and Analytics

As a not-for-profit cooperative, any money we make beyond our costs is given back to our members through “capital credits.” EnergyUnited is retiring $4 million in capital credits this year. These are based on how much a member paid during a certain period and how long they’ve been a member of our cooperative. Members who received service from Crescent EMC or Davidson EMC in 1993 or 1997, or from EnergyUnited in 2024 will receive a portion of the capital credits (“retirement”) that were allocated during these years. Active members will see this as a credit on their December bill.

Employee Spotlight JOSHUA
CLEVELAND

Joshua Cleveland
Joshua Cleveland, Manager of Economic Development and Key Accounts

We sat down with Joshua Cleveland, Manager of Economic Development and Key Accounts. Read on to learn more about his experience at EnergyUnited.

Can you describe a “day in the life” of your responsibilities?

At its core, my job revolves around building and maintaining relationships. I work closely with various partners across 19 counties, supporting around 150 key accounts — acting as a liaison for any of their energy needs, whether that’s billing questions, expansions or new projects. Every day brings a new opportunity to connect and support our members.

Tell us about your educational background and what inspired your career in economic development.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Sport & Entertainment Management from the University of South Carolina and spent three years as an Assistant GM at a golf course. I was always drawn to the business development side of things and wanting to put my MBA from George Mason University to good use, I made the pivot. I joined the cooperative world nine years ago, eventually landing at EnergyUnited. I’m also proud to be a North Carolina Certified Economic Developer, Certified Key Account Executive (NRECA) and Certified Energy Manager (AEE).

What are some of the challenges and exciting aspects of your role??

One of the biggest challenges we face today is managing unprecedented energy loads — especially with the growth of data centers. It’s both a challenge and an exciting opportunity as we work to build the infrastructure to support these large-scale developments.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a similar career path?

Network! Many opportunities arise from the relationships you build, so start early and nurture those connections. Additionally, stay informed. This industry is constantly evolving, and ongoing education is crucial to success.

How have you enjoyed being part of the EnergyUnited team?

Even during my virtual interviews, I could sense the strong, positive culture here. That culture is evident everyday – everyone is very supportive of one another.

If EnergyUnited had a superpower, what would it be?

Regeneration. When storms or challenges hit, we’re there to help our communities recover and thrive again.

Is there anything personal you’d like to share?

I’ve been happily married for almost 10 years, and we have three amazing kids. I’ve always been passionate about sports — especially bowling — and I hope to join the Professional Bowlers Association’s regional tour once my kids are a bit older.

LOCAL LEGENDSID PROCTOR

LOCAL LEGEND
Top: Woolly worm with 13 segments
Bottom: Persimmon seeds showcasing the fork, knife and spoon shapes

Many of you may know Sid Proctor as the owner of Weathervane Winery in Lexington, NC. But did you know that in addition to making excellent wines, Sid is also an amateur weatherman? He uses old-fashioned techniques to forecast the seasons. Take a look at some of these kernels of wisdom that have been passed down from generation to generation to learn what 2026 weather has in store based on the following indicators.

The Woolly Worm

Legend has it that the 13 segments on a woolly worm’s body correspond to the 13 weeks of winter. Dark black colors mean lower-than-average temperatures and snow, spots indicate light snow or frost, brown means average temperatures and light brown means above-average temperatures. 2026 may be a colder-than-average year with higher precipitation.

Persimmon Seeds

According to folklore, a persimmon seed’s inner kernel can predict winter weather. Cut into the seeds and see if you get a spoon, fork or knife shape. A spoon shape indicates a snowy winter, a fork means a mild winter and a knife suggests very cold temperatures.

August Fogs

This year, our area experienced one heavy fog and two medium fogs in August, which means we will likely have a bit of snow in 2026.

Overall, Sid predicts below-normal temperatures and above-average snowfall. We’ll have to wait and see how it pans out!

JUNIOR MEMBER AMBASSADOR DEADLINE: December 15

High school sophomores and juniors can still apply for the Junior Member Ambassador program. Eligible students will be considered for up to three different community engagement opportunities.
