ENERGYUNITED AWARDS SPORTS CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL STUDENTS

Two local students have earned all-expense-paid Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships from EnergyUnited to attend summer basketball camps at two of the state’s largest college campuses in 2021, dependent upon conditions and the universities’ ability to hold camps next summer. The 2020 Sports Camps, which were originally scheduled for June, were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Riley Elliott, a rising seventh grader at Central Davidson Middle School, will represent EnergyUnited next year at the 2021 Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at NC State University.   Riley, who is the daughter of Chris and Shannon Elliott, enjoys playing basketball, singing and playing her guitar.

Caleb Brown, a rising seventh grader at Alexander Graham Middle School, will attend the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp in 2021 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Caleb, the son of David and Jackie Brown, enjoys playing basketball, baseball and drawing.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to recognize these two incredibly gifted student-athletes, Riley and Caleb, for this outstanding achievement,” said Maureen Moore, communications manager at EnergyUnited. “While both camps have been canceled this year, we appreciate the efforts of UNC and NC State University officials to provide an equally exciting opportunity for Riley and Caleb to participate in these camps next year.”

During the overnight camps, students will stay in dorms on campus and get advice from the some of the most renowned coaches and student-athletes in the nation. Coaches at both overnight camps will work closely with each camper to develop fundamental basketball skills while also teaching important lessons on leadership and being a good team player.

Leading the N.C. State women’s camp is head coach Wes Moore, his coaching staff, and current and former N.C. State women’s basketball players. The Carolina camp is led by three-time NCAA national championship coach Roy Williams, his staff, and current and past Tar Heel basketball players.

The all-expense paid scholarships, sponsored by North Carolina’s 26 Touchstone Energy cooperatives, provide funding for more than 50 middle-school students from across North Carolina to attend basketball camp. This is the 17th year NC electric cooperatives have awarded young women scholarships to attend an N.C. State women’s basketball camp and the 15th year partnering with UNC Chapel Hill.
